Iron Man 2 drives an Audi R8 Spyder

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Robert Downey Jr. has returned to his role as the ingenious engineer and Super Hero Iron Man. The world premiere of Iron Man 2 took place on Monday in Los Angeles. Along with Robert Downey Jr., several other big names accompanied director Jon Favreau down the red carpet, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Mickey Rourke, Don Cheadle, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson – and right in the centre of things, the Audi R8 Spyder. Robert Downey Jr. arrived for the premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in the supercar. It was a scene straight out of the Marvel Studios movie, in which main character Tony Stark drives the open-top two-seater.

The R8 Spyder is practically custom-made for the superhero, a technological genius who needs to drive the car without his high-tech suit, but doesn’t want to miss out on innovative technology. Robert Downey Jr. and his R8 Spyder put Audi’s philosophy of Vorsprung durch Technik to good use: Iron Man’s visual capabilities are optimized by the helmet, for example, and the R8’s high efficiency LED headlights likewise provide for good vision.

The supercar from Audi matches the Super Hero’s indestructible suit with its own carbon fiber composite materials in parts of its exterior skin, along with a high-strength aluminum frame known as the Audi Space Frame. And they both have their hearts in the right place: a glowing artificial one in Iron Man’s chest, and an impressive mid-engine design in the R8, which is visible externally.

With its jet propulsion, the Iron Man suit worn by Robert Downey Jr. is unrivalled – and the R8 Spyder, with its 525 hp engine, needn’t fear its rivals either. The 5.2 liter FSI engine of the R8 powers the two-seater convertible to a top speed of 313 kilometers an hour. Only flying could be better – and in this case, Iron Man clearly comes out on top. But Robert Downey Jr. hardly needs to concern himself. In the movie, he has the best of both worlds.

“Just like the first movie, Iron Man 2 is the perfect environment for the Audi R8. Like us, the technologically ingenious Super Hero Tony Stark represents Vorsprung durch Technik. And just as the R8 Spyder was developed from the Audi R8, the Super Hero Tony Stark surprises us with new innovations,” said Lothar Korn, Head of Marketing Communications at Audi. Robert Downey Jr., alias Tony Stark, also drove the Audi R8 in the first Iron Man movie, which was released in May 2008.

Tom Kristensen’s exclusive Le Mans countdown - part 8

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

In a weekly column Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen gives some exclusive insights behind the scenes of the world’s most famous endurance race and the preparation by Audi Sport Team Joest.

“During the 30-hour test at Le Castellet this week we had the opportunity of driving plenty of miles in the Audi R15 plus. So this is a good point in time to explain the cockpit of our diesel race sports car to you.

You can’t compare the cockpit of an LMP1 with a road car in any respect. Even a genuine sports car like the Audi R8 LMS offers a lot more comfort than the R15 plus does. It is a thorough-bred race car that is totally designed for speed and efficiency and has a very direct power-assisted steering ratio.

Nevertheless, Audi Sport keeps trying to make the work easier for us drivers and to give us the best possible ‘comfort’ under the circumstances. For example, some of the details in the R15 plus have been modified compared with last year’s R15. Some of the switches and buttons are now positioned on a console along the right-hand side of the seat. And the pit speed limiter that serves to prevent us from exceeding the speed in the pit lane is now located behind the steering wheel.

Speaking of the steering wheel: the surface texture has been changed too so that the steering wheel’s grip is now even better than before. Only the controls we use most, like the gearshift, traction control (ASR) adjustment, brake balance adjustment, the high beam and the radio button, are located on the steering wheel, which is packed with electronics. This helps us keep a good overview of these functions.

The two ASR buttons are very important. In the race you always try to adjust the ASR to the conditions of the track and the tires - and these conditions constantly change during the race at Le Mans.

We constantly optimize and adjust the brake balance between the front and rear wheels as well. This for example depends on the temperatures which the sensors on the brakes transmit to the pits by a telemetry signal. The high beam button has a special additional function: if we push it for at least two seconds, the lights start flashing. We can use this to alert slower vehicles to us.

A display which can be freely programmed sits in a central position on the steering wheel. The mechanics and engineers use different screens than the drivers when starting up and checking the engine, for example. The most important information we need is the gear we’ve engaged, which is displayed particularly prominently, our lap time and the so-called delta time that lets us see in each sector whether we’re losing or gaining time to the respective fastest lap. The display has a day- and a night-time mode.

Also located behind the steering wheel are the two paddle shifters we use for up- or downshifting. This means that even in tight hairpins when we heavily turn in the wheel we can keep both hands on it and shift at the same time.

In a modern race car small lamps typically show you when you’ve reached the engine speed at which you need to shift gears. Green, yellow and red LEDs light up one after the other. On red, we shift, which in the R15 is done by means of an electro-pneumatic system.

The steering wheel is cut at the bottom to make it easier for us to get in and out of the car. Just looking at pictures, you get no idea of how tight things are inside a cockpit and how difficult it is to pull our legs out from under the steering wheel when it’s time for a driver change.

The seating position in the R15 plus is comparable to that of a Formula 1 car. The nose of the vehicle points upward to ensure optimum airflow underneath the car. This means your feet are in a very high position. Your heels are just below the level of your heart. This also influences your blood circulation, but you get used to that.

As you know, the R15 plus is an open-top vehicle. A small windshield that is optimally adapted to the seating positions of all three drivers keeps our helmets from being overly exposed to the air flow. Of course the aerodynamicists make sure that the windshield isn’t too high or too wide because that costs top speed on the straights, which is a crucial factor at Le Mans.

The windshield, by the way, can be exchanged very quickly during a pit stop in case it’s gotten too dirty - yes, believe it or not, we actually look through it - or if it’s been damaged by stone chips or rubber from tire wear flying around the track.

Overall, the seating position in the R15 is very important. All three drivers have to sit similarly, even if their heights and builds differ. And of course you’ve got to be firmly strapped in to really get a good feel for the car.

The starting function of the R15 plus is another interesting feature: when it’s turned off, the engine runs in regular mode. But when you push the button, the engine will run at a predefined rpm. That helps us move off quickly after a pit stop.

‘Cut’ is primarily used to reset the electronics. The ‘event’ button serves to flag a certain event, such as shifting event that didn’t go perfectly, in the data logging system. This makes it possible later on for the technicians to take an especially close look at the data logged at that particular point in time to locate a potential fault.

The pedals are just like those in a production vehicle: the gas pedal is on the right, the clutch on the left, and the brake pedal in the middle, but we only use the clutch to start off from rest. Also, like in any road-going Audi, there’s a footrest on the left which supports me while cornering.

In the DTM car I used to primarily brake with my left foot, but in the R15 I usually brake with my right one - particularly in front of the chicanes at Le Mans. Only when braking for a very short time like in front of fast corners I use my left foot.

By the way, compared to a ‘normal’ race car, conditions in the cockpit of the R15 plus are unusually quiet which is very pleasant for us drivers. The V10 TDI engine is a bit noisier and harsher than the V12 TDI from the R10. From a certain speed onward, you couldn’t even hear the V12 TDI anymore at all, just the wind noise.

You perceive the engine of the R15 plus in all rpm ranges. But when you lift in a long bend, you can actually hear the squealing of the tires - and that’s definitely unusual in a race car.

I’d really like to take you out on a lap in the R15 plus but there’s simply not enough room on the passenger’s side. But, from now on, when you see the pictures from our onboard cameras at Le Mans, you may have a better idea of the things that go on in our cockpit day and night.”

Auto Union Silver Arrows back on the starting grid in Monte Carlo

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

The hearts of fans of historic motor sport will beat faster on the first weekend in May. They may have the good fortune to witness the moment when two legends meet up again: Auto Union racing cars from the 1930s and Monte Carlo, the jewel in the annual motor sport calendar. For the first time since 1937, the sound of two Auto Union Silver Arrows will echo through the narrow streets of the Principality – at the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique on May 1 and 2. These giants of a past era will have worthy drivers: former Formula One stars Jacky Ickx and Hans-Joachim Stuck.

Hans-Joachim Stuck explains how much this guest appearance means to him: “It will be a very emotional moment for me when I sit in the car that my father also drove in Monte Carlo. When I think of the sound the 16-cylinder engine will make in those built-up streets, it already sends a shiver down my spine!” It was Hans Stuck who brought home the first major successes for the newly established Auto Union racing department back in 1934. In the 16-cylinder mid-engined racing car designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the “Hillclimb King”, as they called him in those days, broke several world records on the Avus circuit in Berlin. And that was only the start: he triumphed in most of the season’s races and became the unofficial European Champion, a title that was only acknowledged by the sport authorities in the following season. The Monaco Grand Prix was held twice in the 1930s, in 1936 und 1937. It was not one of the venues at which Auto Union scored a victory. The best placings were achieved by Hans Stuck: third in 1936 and fourth in 1937 at the wheel of the Auto Union Type C.

Hans-Joachim Stuck can also look back on a career that included Grand Prix racing. He drove a Formula One car for five seasons, and was on the podium twice in a period when German drivers in this supreme motor racing category were few and far between. Stuck, who competed in sports car and German Touring Car races with great success for Audi at the end of the 1980s and in the early 1990s, is about to find himself in charge of a racing-car behemoth with 16 cylinders and a power output of 520 hp. Although Audi Tradition’s authentic replica of the original Type C no longer has a chance to reach the unbelievable top speed of 340 kilometres an hour that it recorded in 1936, its fascination nonetheless persists to this day.

At about the same time, Jacky Ickx will be putting on his helmet and preparing to take the wheel of the Auto Union Type D with its twin-supercharger engine. This car was the final stage in the development work undertaken by the Auto Union racing department. At the end of the 1938 season a change in the rules was announced; engines had to be limited to a displacement of three litres. This meant a new Auto Union car with a 12-cylinder engine that, with an output of 485 hp, had no trouble in rocketing the latest Silver Arrow up to 330 km/h. Scarcely any driver on the international motor sport scene can claim as much experience as Jacky Ickx, who drove in Formula One for no fewer than twelve years, was twice runner-up in the world championship and is also famous as “Mr. Le Mans”. The Belgian driver won the 24-hour race there six times, a record that was expected to last for ever until Tom Kristensen, driving the Audi R8 and later the R10, scored his seventh win. Jacky Ickx drove the Type C at the Monte Carlo event in 2008, and is looking forward to this year’s Grand Prix de Monaco Historique: “To drive such a car here is a privilege!”

This is the seventh time that the Automobile Club de Monaco has staged this competition for historic racing cars on the Formula One circuit in Monte Carlo. This year, historic Formula One cars from 1947 to 1978 and Formula Three cars built in 1984 or earlier will contend with each other in genuine race conditions. The Auto Union racing cars will start together in two special events, and complete a number of laps at about midday on Saturday May 1 and again on the afternoon of Sunday May 2.

Coffs Harbour - first taste of dirt for Team Hyundai Rallye’s i30

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Hyundai Motor Company Australia will hit the dirt for the first time in Coffs Harbour next month, competing in the NSW round of the Australian Rally Championship.

Team Hyundai Rallye, lead by veteran rally driver Mick Gillett, will team with navigating partner of twenty years, Harvey Smith in an i30 CRDi turbo diesel to tackle the challenging north coast event.

With a successful history in the NSW Rally Championships, including the last four years driving Hyundais, the team took possession of an i30 in November 2009, and will rally with factory backing from the Hyundai Genuine Parts and Accessories division of Hyundai Motor Company Australia.

Team Hyundai Rallye will compete in the ‘Showroom Class’ of the Australian Rally Championship, having undergone a complete drivetrain transfer, with the petrol automatic morphing into a powerful and potent CRDi manual after a complete engine and gearbox transplant.

Identification and elimination of body weight is a constant struggle for non-production based rally cars. However, after an extensive interior strip-down, the fitment of a roll cage and tireless hours of refitting all parts and trim, the i30 is ready to meet the rigorous safety standards required to compete.

The team will receive support during the championship rounds from the professional and expert technicians in the national Hyundai retail network. Team driver Mick Gillett is chomping at the bit to get behind the wheel. “It’s taken a long time to get the i30 ready to rally. We could not have done it without the support of our sponsors and the rally team. The car has outstanding handling, responsive steering and loads of power,” he said. “This is a great match for the challenging Coffs Harbour roads and I will be looking for a fast start to our series campaign.”

With 500,000 sales and a raft of global awards - including Australia’s ‘Best Mid-size Car Under $30,000’ 2009 – under its belt, Hyundai’s i30 is poised to further prove its ruggedness and performance in the challenging rally arena.

The plant, which is owned 70% by PSA Peugeot Citroën and 30% by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, is located at Kaluga, 180km South-West of Moscow.

The ceremony took place in the presence of Mr. Georgi Poltavchenko, Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Central Federal District, and Mr. Anatoly Artamonov, Governor of the Region of Kaluga.

This plant, which represents a joint initial investment of €470 million, will enable PSA Peugeot Citroën and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation to become major players in the Russian automotive market, whose growth potential is significant.

From April 2010 the Kaluga plant will produce the Peugeot 308, followed by the Citroën C4 and the Citroën C-Crosser, Peugeot 4007 and Mitsubishi Outlander SUV models. These models target the mid-range segments of the Russian market.

The plant will be fully operational in 2012. From that date, the annual production capacity of the plant will be 125,000 units, split 85,000 mid-range sedan vehicles for Peugeot and Citroën and 40,000 mid-range SUVs for Peugeot, Citroën and Mitsubishi.

The PCMA Rus plant will be an extremely compact factory, with optimised workspace divided between just two buildings: one for the paint shop, and one for the body in white and assembly workshops. In order to reduce its environmental footprint, the plant will adopt the best practices from its parent companies for energy saving, reduction of CO2 emission and waste reduction (use of water based paints only, sustainable packaging for shipment).

The plant will employ about 3,000 people, from which approximately 2,600 will be trained at the local training centre built in cooperation with the Government of the Kaluga Region.

Mazda Receives Ichimura Industrial Award for i-stop

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Mazda Motor Corporation is pleased to announce that the New Technology Development Foundation of Tokyo has awarded it the Contribution Prize of the 42nd annual lchimura Industrial Awards for its development of the combustion technology used in i-stop, Mazda’s unique engine idling stop system. The Ichimura Industrial Awards are given annually to researchers or groups that make a significant contribution to industry by developing exceptional industrial technology in Japan.

Since i-stop was launched in Japan in the all-new Mazda Axela (known as Mazda3 overseas) in June 2009, it has won the 2010 RJC Technology of the Year prize from the Automotive Researchers’ & Journalists’ Conference of Japan, the 2009 Eco-Products Award from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), the 2009 Technology Award from the Combustion Society of Japan, and the Technological Development Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE). Mazda’s i-stop system, paired with a direct injection engine, has been highly acclaimed as a unique eco-friendly technology for its significant improvement in fuel economy while ensuring a natural driving feel.

Idling stop systems are relatively low cost and can be widely deployed to become a highly effective method of reducing CO2 emissions. In this sense, i-stop has great potential to contribute to a more eco-friendly world. Mazda’s i-stop leverages the characteristics of direct injection engines to achieve a ‘combustion restart.’ This means that when the engine is stopped, the i-stop system injects fuel directly into a cylinder, and then ignites it to generate downward piston force to initiate engine restart. Using this technology, i-stop restarts the engine in just 0.35 seconds, about half the time of most other competing systems, while minimizing noise and vibration.

The award presentation ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at the Hotel Okura Tokyo.
